Wednesday Afternoon - A Josiah Update

Greetings all you fine people

Well, Marie and I just finished our first Trach Care and G-Tube Care classes. Well, there really is only one class for the G-Tube: all our other training will take place crib-side with Josiah. We'll have a few more Trach Care classes coming up in the next few weeks, but everything has gone really well so far. I just finished doing my first suction on Josiah!!! Yikes! It felt so invasive and I felt so bad for the guy, but hey he wasn't liking the goobers and they had to go.

Josiah has been doing pretty good today. He seems to be breathing a little easier today than yesterday and he's now on room air (21%, no longer 28%). His G-Tube is starting to secrete the usual post-op fluid so that needs to be taken care of, and he's still very sensitive with his belly (who wouldn't?!). The G-Tube trainer was showing us some stuff on Josiah and he was pretty choked that we were messing with his appliance. But he will become less sensitive in a few days.

Right now Josiah is having his trach ties (the string/plastic tube that's around his neck holding the trach appliance in place) changed and Marie will then give him a bath. Josiah is up to full feeds through the G-Tube and soon he'll be moving to hourly feeds (not continuous anymore).

In the next couple of weeks (sooner rather than later though!) we're going to be buying a van. Marie and I were planning all along to get a new vehicle, but that was put on hold when Josiah came early. Now it's even more clear that we need a van when you consider the extra equipment we'll have to cart around with Josiah.

Oh, and maybe the biggest news of all: Josiah's moving to 'South'! 'South' is an area of private rooms set aside for older infants who are stable and preparing for going home. It is still in the NICU, but it is past the family lounge, and we still get 2:1 nursing care. This is fantastic because it quieter, allows us (Marie) to sleep beside Josiah (she'll be definitely doing that!) if we want and we can bring in a bunch of Josiah's stuff to get him ready for home (like his vibrating chair and so on).

So that's that. I'm going to be heading back into Abby tonight so that I can spend Thursday in the office. Thanks for always following our story and praying as needed!

What an amazing feeling it will be to bring Josiah over the threshold of your home!! Praying all preparations, including car needs, go smoothly. You are in my prayers even if I'm not in your comments :)
Bless you.

Kathy

A mini van huh! So you are becoming mini van people!!!!! It'll be good. We must all be growning up, what gives with that. I will be praying that you get a really good deal on a van. And I am excited that you get to sleep in the room with Josiah. How cool is that.

Love you guys!

Andrew,

Just remember to call it the "Man-Van." That way it sounds cool to you and really...that's all that matters!

Especially since it's 2-1 (guys to girls) in your family...that it makes the name the logical choice!
