Hi Everyone
So, just got off the phone with Marie (because I'm in Abby for the day) and she reports that Josiah is doing well. He's on a little less sedatives than before, but he's still quite sleepy. Marie says he woke up for a bit today and for the first time got to see his own reflection in a mirror (we got him a toy mirror to interact with because he can't be very mobile right now!) and I guess it was neat watching him watch himself.
One of Josiah's sutures came off in the wee hours of the morning. Josiah has two sutures (black threads that look like the material used for stitches) that are attached to either side of his stoma (that's the hole the surgeons made in his throat). The sutures are purely a back up system: if for some reason Josiah's tache pops out the doctors can pull on the sutures and Josiah's airway is maintained (the stoma won't collapse). The doctors aren't too worried at this point since they feel they can intubate him in an emergency, so we're just praying that the tache will not pop out, that Josiah won't be too active, and the stoma will heal and become nice and firm. The doctors are still planning to replace this trache with a clean one on Monday. And pray that when Josiah is ready to leave his current room (Procedure Room 1 in the NICU) that he'll be able to be near his friends again in Room 41! (Mommy & Daddy want to be near their friends too!!)
And it appears that Josiah is managing his secretions well. It's too early to tell right now, but Josiah hasn't been bubbling up and drooling as much as when he was paralyzed; actually, there's pretty much never any spit coming out of his mouth which is a very good sign that his swallowing technique is working! Pray that Josiah will develop a strong and consistent swallowing technique and that God will strengthen and develop Josiah's epiglottis so that he can breathe and eat normally.
Well, that was a brief post but I'm off to other things. Have a great day everyone and thanks for all your prayers!

Praying
Good idea with the mirror. I wonder when he looks at himself if he thinks he cute?!! (ha ha)
Andrew your getting to be quite up on the medical terms! I'm praying for a nice firm and strong stoma for the little guy. Lord for heavens sake don't let the trache pop out.
Lord let Josiah do well enough so that he can be moved back to his friends in room 41. Would be nice for mom and dad too. Lord build Josiah up a nice strong swallowing technique (kind of an important one.) Thank You Lord for all that You do and will do. We love and praise You always and we thank You for Josiah and for Andrew and Marie. Draw them very near to You during this time, keep them close and comforted and full of the peace that only You can give.
Love Sue
