This have been a very very rough day. Josiah has self-extubated twice.
The first was this morning after I held him for an hour. Our time together was fantastic: he was awake and peaceful for most of it before he went into a relaxing nap. But he ending up puking when he was put into the crib and a few minutes after that he arched his back and coughed hard, pushing his tube out. I came in a few minutes after this (I had stepped out to grab a coffee) and I watched my son turn purple from the lack of oxygen. When the tube partially comes up, Josiah essentially suffocates.
The team assembled quickly and thankfully there were a couple there who were quite familiar with Josiah's particulars and so he was oxygenated with an LAM (I forget what it stands for, but it opens up the larynx and forcing oxygen down I believe) as they prepped him for intubation. Thankfully it took the doctor only one attempt to get his breathing tube in and thus there wasn't much blood (what was there was probably from Josiah's initial extubation).
I stayed with Josiah for 30 minutes - weeping like crazy - then I went to talk to Marie who needed the extra sleep today. After breaking the news and praying together, I headed into Abbotsford. A while later when the doctors attempted to x-ray him to check the position of the tube, Josiah got mad and extubated again. Apparently a nurse was trying to hold him down, but he was too strong. His strength and resilience is both his blessing and bane. This time the doctors decided to intubate him with a slightly larger tube and sent it a little bit further down his trachea in hopes that this will prevent him from extubating in the future. The doctors and Marie also decided that it would be wise to sedate Josiah for the rest of the day to help him recover.
Praise God that Josiah made it out and that he was spared death and critical injury on two occasions. Praise God that he has given us an medical staff and ability to tend to Josiah's needs and give him a chance at life.
Prayer Requests:
- That Josiah won't self-extubate again
- That there will be no permanent damage from the extubation/re-intubations and from the periods of oxygen deprivation
- That Josiah will be able to rest and recover fully
- That the doctors and nurses (and parents) will find a way to prevent Josiah from arching his body
- That Marie & I may recover from this brutally scary day
Thank you.
- Andrew, Marie & Josiah

Wow Andrew and Marie,
We are praying for you guys like crazy! May your hearts be at rest in the hands of your Heavenly Father tonight. You guys sure have a strong little guy there. I wonder which one of you does the strength come from?!?!?! :) I will see you guys this coming week on Wednesday.
Love you guys,
Leanne and Jeral (the better half God blessed me with).
Sorry we haven't made it in to see you guys yet, but we do faithfully read your blog (and cry I might add) and we are praying!
Much love to you three!!
Jeremy, Leanne and Sam
I felt the need to weigh in as another Leanne in your life! Wow--how many do you know? And all spelling their names correctly!
Anyway, my heart is struggling in prayer for your family and I will persist in praying for God's richest blessings in your life as well as the healing and health of Josiah. We love you guys and wish you were a lot closer to hug way more often! I also join you in praise to God that Josiah was born in BC where he could have such great care and that you guys are able to receive this help compliments of our health care system!
Lotsa love, Leanne Dyck
I am still here...
On the night of March 25th I had a dream...I believe it was of Josiah...that he turned purple, was hanging upside down and could not breathe...I can vividly see the agony you two must be going through!!! And I feel for you...Having the spiritual gifts of mercy and prophecy can either be GREAT or just plain SCARY sometimes...as you probably know right Marie? (I believe one of your top gifts is Mercy right??? You must struggle so much when you see Josiah in so much pain...)
My prayer for You is that you'd be amazed...this is for you: Click here to see it!
Keeping you and your family in my prayers, and have friends that are praying also. Praying that you are feeling God's presence during this rough time, and praying that Josiah will be healed.
